Assignments for Unit One, Themes in Literature:

A six-week unit starting August 18  and closing September 25.  The students will be scored out of approximately 360  total points.

1.           Four Short Stories
The students will read “Leiningen versus the Ants,” “Contents of the Dead Man’s Pockets,” “The Monkey’s Paw,” and “Masque of the Red Death,” all short stories found in the brown textbook they will be provided.  They will interpret the readings through the three literary conflicts that I will teach them throughout the unit.
2. Five grammar assignments

  The students will review the structure of clauses in a sentence, and the use and identification of relative pronouns and subordinating conjunctions.  They will complete five short assignments worth a total of 50 points.

3. Grammar Quiz
A 40-point review quiz will test their understanding of the grammar covered in the unit.
4. Vocabulary
The students will use their dictionaries to define a list of vocabulary words, organized according to the Greek or Latin words from which they are built. 
5. Vocabulary Exam
A 50-point exam will review the introduced vocabulary.
6. Five-paragraph essay on Literary Conflict
The students will word-process a 110-point essay that interprets either “The Masque of the Red Death” or “Contents of the Dead Man’s Pockets” according the literary conflict of their choice.
7. Unit Test
This is a comprehensive test, worth 120 points, that will review the reading and concepts they learned.
